Sound Familiar?

Goal setting shouldn't feel like
pulling teeth.

You're sitting with a family, trying to help them think about their future — and instead of excitement, you get silence, deflection, or a flat "I don't know." You're not doing anything wrong. Goal setting is hard when families are in survival mode, and most training doesn't give you the tools to change that.

Families resist setting goals — they can barely see past today, let alone dream about the future.

You sense embarrassment or shame when goals come up, and the conversation shuts down fast.

Parents feel lectured or controlled, and you end up feeling like the bad guy just for trying to help.

You don't know how to break goals down in a way that feels doable — not overwhelming — for the families you serve.

What You'll Learn

Leave with a process that actually works

This training gives you a concrete, family-centered approach to goal setting — one that's warm, strengths-based, and meets families exactly where they are.

A clear, manageable process for goal-setting sessions

Make goal setting feel approachable and even rewarding for the families you serve — not another box to check.

Language that takes the pressure off parents

Learn how to talk about goals in a way that feels collaborative and safe, not evaluative or judgmental.

Strategies for families who shut down or push back

Learn how to turn barriers into mini-goals, helping families regain confidence and build momentum even when big goals feel out of reach.

How to connect families to their own values and dreams

Explore motivations for change so families choose goals that are meaningful to them — not just meaningful to the program.

Tools for celebrating milestones and sustaining momentum

Help families recognize and celebrate small wins — a key ingredient for long-term change and continued engagement.

The Tool Behind the Training

Meet Reachables®
Family Goal-Setting Cards

Reachables® aren't just a conversation starter — they're a professionally developed tool created by Healthy Families staff at Parenting Now based on years of real-world home visiting practice. The cards give families a visual, engaging, low-pressure way to explore what they value and what they want for their lives. And they give you a natural, strengths-based entry point into goal-setting conversations that would otherwise feel awkward or forced.

What makes them different? Most goal-setting tools are forms — checkboxes, scales, columns of text. Reachables® are cards. Families pick them up, sort them, discuss them. The tool does the heavy lifting of opening the conversation so you can focus on listening and guiding.

They're visually pleasing and non-challenging by design — which means families who have shut down in the past with traditional goal-setting approaches often engage with Reachables® in a completely different way. Participants have described watching both parents spontaneously lean in, debate their choices, and leave with a shared sense of direction.

Frequently asked
questions

Do I need to already own Reachables® cards to take this training?

No — but you'll get the most out of the training if you have them. The cards are sold separately at parentingnow.org. Many participants purchase the cards at the same time they enroll in the training so they're ready to use them right away.

Who is this training designed for?

This training is designed for home visitors, parenting educators, and family advocates — anyone who works directly with families in a coaching or support role. It's valuable for both new practitioners and experienced staff looking for a fresh, structured approach.

How long will the course take to complete?

The original live workshop ran 2 hours. As a self-paced course with reflection activities included, most participants will complete it in 2–3 hours. You have 30 days of access, so you can take your time or revisit any section.

Can I access the course on my phone or tablet?

Yes! The course is fully accessible on any device — desktop, tablet, or smartphone. The audio option makes it especially easy to listen while on the go.

Is this training useful if I've already used Reachables® before?

Absolutely. Participants with years of experience have called it a "great refresher" that deepened their intentionality and gave them new language and strategies for challenging situations.

Do I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes! Upon completing all course modules you will receive a personalized certificate of completion from Parenting Now — issued in your name. This can be used to document your professional development hours and shared with your supervisor or program.

Can I share my login with a colleague?

No — each enrollment is for one individual only. Login credentials are not to be shared. Because the certificate of completion is issued in the name of the person enrolled, sharing access would mean your colleague cannot receive their own personalized certificate. If others at your organization want to take the training, they'll need to enroll individually.

Q: Can I pay by check instead of credit card?

A: Yes! If you'd prefer to pay by check, just contact us at pn@parentingnow.org and we'll create an invoice for you. Once we receive your payment, we'll send you enrollment details and access to the training.
