Tips on Traveling with Children

Whether it is visiting family in another state or going on vacation, consideration and planning can go a long way to making a trip enjoyable for everyone. Sharing a new place or being with different people often leads to new growth and development for your child and children. Travel also forms lifelong, important memories for your family. Here are some tips for making those special memories:
Traveling by Car

 How long can your child ride at a time? Short breaks after 2 or 2 ½ hours are usually welcome by everyone.
 Car snacks and water bottles that don’t spill are a must!
 Your child’s favorite songs or stories on tape are welcome.
 If you decide to drive through the night to let your child sleep, remember they will be up and at it when you need to nap, so either a friend or a grandparent on the other end is valuable!
 If your child is potty-trained at home, it is helpful to bring a familiar small potty, as new bathrooms can be scary or unavailable when you need them. Travel potties can really save the day.

Traveling by Plane

 Bring the car seat. The airlines will store it for you.
 If it is possible to plan the flight during naptime, try it.
 Plan for delays (flying isn’t what it used to be), bring favorite and new toys, and plenty of snacks. If there is ever a time for possible screen time, flying could be it.
 Bring layers, it can be cold and hot on the same flight.
 Don’t necessarily board early when they offer it. Sometimes it is better to be near the last to board. If possible, send a partner first with all the gear.
 Focus more on your child‘s needs than the grumpy adult giving you the stink eye; children are people, too.

General Tips

 Remember, going on vacation with your child is still parenting, just in a different location.
 Your child’s nap and eating schedule is still necessary, but flexibility is the key when in new places.
 Multigenerational trips can often offer respite and opportunities for different levels of activities to occur.

Traveling with children often offers a unique opportunity to see places and meet local people.
Search out the nearby playgrounds. Research kid-friendly museums and libraries. Take your children to restaurants at off-hours. Take pictures and make a booklet you can show your child upon returning to help remember your journeys. Enjoy this special time with your family!
