Meet Our Staff: Virginia Miller

Get to know Virginia Miller, Family Support Specialist, Healthy Families Lane County at Parenting Now!:

Q: How long have you worked for PN!

A: My start date was March 7, 2018 as a Family Support Specialist, (FSS), with Healthy Families/Parenting Now!. I was also Staff Representative for the Board Of Director’s meetings for the 2018/2019 fiscal year.

Q: In your role at PN!, what do you do?

A: My role as a FSS is to support families who are pre-natal to two-month old babies, and follow with home visits until the child is 3-years old. My role is not to “fix” the family, or their problems, but rather lend an empathic, reliable presence in their lives, offering evidence-based developmental support/activities during each home visit.

If the family is struggling with something, we ask if they would like our support to gather information on how the family can access community services or resources. If the family is unable to access the services, the FSS will offer to take time during the home visit to support the family as they call the resource. The main goal is to empower the families and show that they are in control of their own lives, goals, and values.

Q: What are some of the most rewarding aspects of working for PN!?

A: The most rewarding aspect of working with PN! is the incredible staff and belief in self-care that I have yet to have at any other employer.

Q: What would you like prospective parents to know about Parenting Now! that you think they may not realize or know?

A: I would like parents to know that PN! is accepting of all cultures and religions. All parents should feel comfortable accessing our classes and support groups. We are here for you.

Fun facts about Virginia:

Favorite food: Anything except for seafood (in restaurants) or stuff like tripe and brains. I do love sturgeon, which is currently banned due to overfishing – but also must be prepared at home.

Favorite movie: The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Favorite vacation spot: Anyplace I haven’t been to before. I like to cross off places as I go along with the goal of going to every continent. This September, I can cross off Wisconsin and leave 5 states left to go to be in every state in the U.S.

Favorite animal: I love them all. As a pet, I’d go with cats because they’re so independent and remind me of me.
