Crecer, “To Grow Up,” is Led by Ana Maria Dudley
Imagine moving to a new country, learning a new language, and adapting to the new culture and traditions. It could be an adventure; it could be stressful. Now imagine raising young children in this new world. It would definitely be stressful!
Crecer, which means “to grow up” in Spanish, is a parenting education program offered by Parenting Now! to help Spanish-speaking parents in Lane County add to their parenting tools. Thanks to grants and donations, Crecer is free to participants.
Ana Maria Dudley is a professional parenting educator for Crecer. For nearly 12 years, she has helped families develop parenting styles that work for them in their new country. “I love to lead the groups because I can see the changes in the families, the support they build with each other,” she says.
“It is my goal that when I am done with the group I have helped them build community, make new friends, and this means support for each other. This group helps the families create ‘la plaza’, a place to gather, a place to share their successes, share food and above all share their parenting experience. What else could I ask for? I am honored to be able to facilitate this incredible experience.”
A parent who took Crecer three times says about Ana Maria, “I felt very welcomed. I don’t know if she realizes that she really makes a huge impact on the Latino community. They learn a lot from her and apply it. She knows customs in Mexico and Latin America so she really knows how to get the message across. She does it with such flair, it makes people laugh at their ways.”
Ana Maria says she couldn’t lead the groups without the work of Lesly Canales and her nieces, Amanda and Vivian Canales, who provide the children’s program. Lesly is also a trained parenting educator who can step in as needed.
Ana Maria is an immigrant herself, coming to Oregon from war-torn El Salvador more than 35 years ago. She is married and has two grown children. She loves to cook; here is her recipe for bread pudding.
The Crecer parent says, “I feel that everyone who has met her has been grateful and really touched by her advice.” That sounds like the Ana Maria we know and love!
