With Parenting Now!’s Grandparent’s Day Celebration just around the corner, we’ve decided to round up some fun, local activities that both grandparents and grandkids can enjoy together. If you are looking for more ideas or local resources, visit https://resources.parentingnow.org/.
Little Hands Can: With the intent of creating volunteer opportunities for caregivers to do with their toddlers, Little Hands Can was born. Visit littlehandscan.org for a listing of monthly service opportunities, including park cleanups, community garden upkeep, and more. Little Hands Can offers a wonderful opportunity to teach empathy to young children while enjoying more time together as a family.
Owen Rose Garden: Take a leisurely stroll through one of Eugene’s most beautiful horticulture treasures, Owen Rose Garden. Situated along the Willamette River, this 8 ½-acre park features more than 4,500 roses from over 400 varieties. It’s the perfect place for a late-summer picnic.
Adventure! Children’s Museum: Located on the upper floor of the Valley River Center, Adventure! Children’s Museum offers children the opportunity to get hands on with their learning. Be sure to check out their Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, Tree House Library, and Art Room.
The Museum of Natural and Cultural History: Housed on the UO campus, The Museum of Natural and Cultural History is a great place to learn about Oregon’s past. Preschoolers will love the Little Wonders program—which is offered to families every second Friday of the month at 10:30 a.m. The program features stories, crafts, songs, games, and museum exploration.
Storytime at Local Libraries: Both the Eugene and Springfield libraries offer a variety of free storytimes every week. The Eugene Public Libraries offer different storytimes based on the child’s developmental stage, including Baby Storytime, Walkers Storytime, Preschool Storytime, and more. The Bethel and Sheldon branches also offer storytimes for Spanish-speaking families. The Springfield Public Library offers Baby & Me, Preschool, and Kids Storytime.
Dorris Ranch: The historic orchards at Dorris Ranch in Springfield are the perfect place to learn about Oregon’s rich filbert and agricultural history while giving kids plenty of room to run around. Take a self-guided tour of the Living History Village, which includes a Pioneer Homestead, Native American Plank House, and Trapper’s Cabin.
